We are a group of citizens who deeply care about our village of Goodwood in the Township of Uxbridge. Goodwood is a small rural community of about 700 people nestled on an environmentally sensitive area of Ontario called the Oak Ridges Moraine. By law, this area is protected from unbridled large-scale industrial development.
But in 2019 a proposal to build an industrial-scale grain processing mill near Goodwood was approved by local council despite overwhelming local opposition. Residents were upset about noise, dust, truck traffic and the very real risk of fire and explosion.
The Goodwood Conservation Association led the fight against the mill and prepared to appeal against council's decision. More than 1000 pages of appeal documents were assembled in support of its case. By the end of 2019 the company behind the project, Grainboys Holdings Inc, withdrew its application, and instead decided to build on a different property elsewhere in the township.
We are not against new development. But development must be right for our community. Industrial-scale development should be located in industrial parks, not on rural land. We are vigilant of planning proposals that would destroy farmland, pollute the environment, or damage the character and harmony of our village and surroundings.
Goodwood's rural charm, its liveability, and its beauty are worth protecting. Please subscribe to our email list and stay informed.
